HomeServicesShopify appsApp billing and plans

Get paid through Shopify.

We set up recurring plans, free trials, usage charges and one-time purchases through the Shopify Billing API, so merchants pay on their Shopify invoice and your app enforces each plan.

  • Paid on Shopify invoices
  • Trials and plan tiers
  • Usage charges handled

Trial

On every plan

Billing outside Shopify fails app review, and loose plan logic lets merchants use features they never paid for. We build billing on Shopify's own APIs and tie every feature limit to the plan each store has active.

Every way to charge merchants.

We match your pricing to the billing models Shopify supports, then build the flows merchants use to pick, change and cancel plans.

Recurring plans

Monthly and annual subscriptions created with the Billing API, with optional introductory discounts and merchant approval on Shopify's own confirmation screen.

Free trials

Trial days on any plan, tracked per store, so merchants who reinstall only get a fresh trial if you choose to allow it.

Usage-based charges

Charges for orders, messages or other usage, recorded against a capped amount the merchant approves upfront.

One-time purchases

Single charges for setup, credit packs or extra features, created through the Billing API and confirmed by the merchant.

Managed pricing

For simpler plans, Shopify's managed pricing hosts the plan page for you, and we connect your app's features to whichever plan is chosen.

Upgrades and downgrades

Plan changes take effect cleanly, with Shopify prorating recurring charges and your app updating limits as soon as a merchant switches.

Done properly.

The details that decide whether App billing and plans pays off.

Limits enforced inside your app.

Each feature checks the store's active plan before it runs, and limits update when a merchant upgrades, downgrades or cancels. Webhooks keep your records in step with Shopify, so nothing relies on a cached guess.

Pricing tested before real charges.

On development stores, every charge runs in test mode, so we can approve, decline, upgrade and cancel without real payments. We test each path, including declined approvals and reinstalls, before your app goes live.

How it works.

Clear steps, and you approve each one before we move on.

  1. 01

    Price

We agree plans, trials and usage pricing that suit your app and merchants.

  2. 02

    Build

We create charges with the Billing API and tie features to plans.

  3. 03

    Test

We test every billing path with test charges on development stores.

  4. 04

    Launch

We switch to live billing and watch plan changes after release.

Example project

A new app adding paid plans and usage charges

An SMS marketing app has been free during its beta. The founder wants a free plan, paid tiers and a charge per message above each plan's allowance, all billed through Shopify.

What we would do

  • Model plans and message allowances with the founder
  • Create subscriptions and capped usage charges
  • Build upgrade prompts when allowances run low
  • Test every charge on development stores

An illustration of how we would approach it, not a client result.

What you would get

  • Plans live through the Billing API
  • Usage tracking tied to each store
  • In-app plan and upgrade screens
  • Billing documentation for your team

Questions, answered.

Can I use Stripe for my Shopify app?

Not for apps sold through the Shopify App Store. Shopify requires charges to go through its Billing API or managed pricing, so merchants pay on their Shopify invoice. We set that up for you.

Should I use managed pricing or the Billing API?

Managed pricing suits simple recurring plans and saves building a pricing page. The Billing API suits usage charges, one-time purchases and custom plan logic. We recommend one after looking at your pricing.

What happens when a merchant changes plan?

Shopify asks the merchant to approve the new plan and handles proration. Your app receives a webhook and updates their limits straight away, so access always matches what they pay for.

How much does billing setup cost?

Billing work is quoted after a short call, with a fixed price agreed before we start. If we are building your whole app, billing is included in that quote.
