Website audit checklist
A step-by-step way to find what is slowing your site down, losing enquiries or putting you at risk. Work through it section by section, then fix the essentials first.
This checklist is for business owners and marketers who want to check an existing website before a redesign, a marketing push or a new year of trading. It covers performance, usability, search, tracking, accessibility and the legal basics for a UK business.
Open your site on a laptop and a phone, and have your Google Search Console and GA4 logins ready. Tick each check as you go and note anything that fails. Your progress saves in this browser, and you can print the list or copy it as text.

What makes the difference when you put it to work.
- Audit templates, not every page. Most sites use a handful of page layouts, so checking one of each finds most problems quickly.
- Keep a simple findings list with three columns: the problem, how serious it is and who will fix it.
- Fix the pages that make money first. Start with your homepage, main service or product pages, contact page and checkout.
- Re-run the essentials after big changes. A redesign, new platform or new plugin can undo earlier fixes without anyone noticing.
Questions, answered.
What is a website audit?
A website audit is a structured check of how well a site works for visitors, search engines and the business. It looks at speed, mobile use, content, SEO, tracking, accessibility, security and legal basics, then lists what to fix in order of importance.
How often should I audit my website?
As a rule of thumb, run a full audit once a year and a quick check of the essentials every few months. Always audit before and after a redesign, a platform move or any other major change.
Can I audit my own website for free?
Yes. Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse and free accessibility checkers cover much of this checklist. Paid crawlers save time on larger sites, and an outside view helps spot problems you have stopped noticing. If you would rather hand it over, Infinity runs one-off audits at a fixed price agreed after a short call.
What are Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals are Google's measures of real-world page experience: Largest Contentful Paint for loading, Interaction to Next Paint for responsiveness and Cumulative Layout Shift for visual stability. Good scores are an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, an INP of 200 milliseconds or less and a CLS of 0.1 or less. INP replaced First Input Delay in March 2024.
Does my small business website need to be accessible?
The Equality Act 2010 requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and that can apply to websites. WCAG 2.2 level AA is the standard to aim for. An accessible site is also easier for everyone to use.
